Update 10:17 PM. The Associated Press has identified the shooting suspect as Robert Lewis Dear.

Update 8:15 PM. The CSPD and Mayor John Struthers confirm that three died in the second Colorado Springs shooting in the last month. On Oct 31, a gunman killed 3 near downtown. Of today’s deaths, two were civilians and one was a UCCS police officer, 44 year old Garrett Swasey. Nine others, four civilians and five police officers, were shot and are said to be in good condition.

As of now, Buckley says, the shooter’s motives are still unclear and it is unknown if Planned Parenthood was the actual target or a circumstantial location. The crime scene will take days to process, according to CSPD, and answers could be slow to come. Even the shooter’s identity has not been released despite assurances that he is in custody.

Update 5:15 PM. At the 5:00 press conference, Lt. Catherine Buckley of the CSPD as confirmed that the shooter has been detained and that there were eleven people transported to local hospitals, including five police officers. Strong Mayor John Struthers and both the captains of the local police and fire departments have praised the work of local law enforcement and emergency response crews. Lt. Buckley says that there is still a lot of work to do to sift through the crime scene but that the scene has not been cleared as safe yet. At this time, the identity of the shooter has not been released.

Update 4:53 PM. According to reports, the shooter has been detained. The CSPD, working with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, the CBI, the ATF and other organizations has been working since noon to contain and control the situation. At least four police officers have been shot and local hospitals report that at least nine victims have been brought in for treatment. In a recent press conference, CSPD officials have declined to comment on the motivations of the shooter as, they said, he has not been identified.

It seems that the standoff situation has been brought to a close, but the building has not been cleared of what the CSPD describes as the “items” that the shooter brought with him. Now, the investigation will, hopefully, reveal the shooter’s motives and prove that the local law enforcement agencies have handled the situation professionally and effectively, ensuring the safety of the hostages and victims as best as was possible.

Update 2:33 PM. News 13 is reporting that there have been 3 police officers and an unknown number of civilians shot. The shooter was thought to be contained inside the Planned Parenthood building, but a search of the building has not found the shooter. Police now believe that the shooter is still at-large in the vicinity of Fillmore and Centennial, just up the block from Coronado.

KRDO Channel 13 is reporting that there is an active shooter just outside of Coronado at the Planned Parenthood office on Centennial. Early reports indicate that a police officer has been shot and that the shooter is firing at passing cars.

Currently, Centennial is closed and the King Sooper’s is on a lockdown.
