Coronado Varsity Volleyball added two more out of league wins to their record in another great week at the top of 5A team rankings.

Douglas County:
In a close tenth match of the season Coronado encountered strong competition from Castle Rock’s Douglas County. The Cougars came back from a two set deficit to defeat Douglas County in five sets, the scores being 21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, and 15-12. Stepping up to the plate were juniors Mara Abernethy and Ashlynn Garcia. Both returning members of varsity, Garcia had a career high of 29 digs, and Abernethy racked up 20 kills for a career best as well. Setter Delaney St. Pierre, 11, also contributed six aces and an electrifying 38 assists.

Air Academy
Only two days later the Cougars encountered the then-4-4 Air Academy Kadets. The Cougars came alive in the Coronado gym with scrappy play and a whole lot of heart. Varsity head coach Stormie Wells has been “thrilled with the tenacity” of this year’s team, and the cohesion and bond of the team is clear to anyone who watches them. Putting up a strong performance in the match was Cami Nelson, 11, who led the match with three blocks. Perennial leaders in kills for the Cougars were juniors Jaelyn Hershberger, Mallory Brown, and Mara Abernethy, all with at least 10 kills. Although the Cougars faltered in the second set with a 21-25 loss, the team came back strong in the third and fourth sets to win the match.

The Cougars are now ranked third in 5A team standings, and as the Cougars look towards Regionals, these standings will only become more important.
