SAG Awards Reaches 53rd Anniversary

The 53rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards held an amazing ceremony for actors and actresses.

The 53rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was held on Sunday, 1/29, and featured many wonderful actors and actresses, all of whom showed their talent in the art of acting. Performances nominated his year have showed the viewing world true talent and emotion, through the SAG awards, actors, producers, and directors get the recognition they deserve.

At this year’s award ceremony, actors and actresses who won awards accepted them with grace and happiness. The award for the ‘Most Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture’ was won by Hidden Figures, a story about three African American women working for NASA, living through both racism and sexism, displaying the stories of real women who lived through these times.

The award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie’ was won by Sarah Paulson, most commonly known from her performances on American Horror Story. She won this award for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which was actually filmed at the same time as the fifth season of American Horror Story.

The award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series’ was won by Claire Foy, in The Crown.  The award for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series’ was won by the Netflix series Orange is The New Black.  The award for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’ was won by another Netflix series, Stranger Things.

The award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role was won by Denzel Washington for his performance in Fences. The award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series was won by John Lithgow in The Crown. The award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series was won by William H. Macy in Shameless.

 

The 53rd annual Lifetime Achievement Award was handed to American actress, singer, writer, comedian and producer Lily Tomlin. She began working off-Broadway during the 1960’s, her career as a stand-up comedian beginning afterwards. On her career, she feels as though she’s “just getting started,” and stated an enumeration of causes that she cared about, including global warming, LGBT issues, the Dakota Access Pipeline, and immigration.

During the awards ceremony, speeches from the winners were often political, voicing their opinions, both good and bad. Many celebrities posed their distress on the topics currently afflicting our society. However, even with politics taking up a chunk of time, the awards show was still very beautiful and heartwarming with many celebrities caring so deeply about issues affecting Americans today.

Our culture is influenced by the viewing of movies television and celebrities alike. Seeing different forms of media show their influence on tough topics and issues is uplifting and refreshing. The 53rd SAG awards was an amazing ceremony, and there is much anticipation for the 54th ceremony!
