Covid Situation in India

Covid-19 is still a prevalent issue around world, and India has been it especially hard in the past weeks, here is some more information regarding India’s situation.

Covid around the world has become more prevalent in our lives. With cases increasing more and more everyday. However in India cases have hit an all time high and the country is scrambling to keep up.
As of right now the total cases of Covid-19 in India have hit a staggering 22.3 Million cases out of the 158 Million cases world wide. Although 18.3 Millions of those infected have recovered, sadly 242 thousand have passed and the number is still increasing. With a new and more intense Covid outbreak the number of cases and hospitalizations in India have recently blown up. According to CNN “More than 900,000 Covid-19 patients in India are on oxygen support — about a quarter of all active cases — and a further 170,000 are on ventilators.” Last Sunday more than 4,000 people died from Covid-19 making it the second time in a row the country has recorded over 4,000 deaths in one day. As of right now, India has the third highest death toll in the world.
How is India handling the outbreak? India’s hospitals have been overrun with Covid patients and therefore have a serious lack of oxygen for those who are in desperate need. As of right now India’s top court has set up a 12-member National Task Force to assess the availability and distribution of medical oxygen, this Task force is also helping relay information and needs to other parties in order to help India receive the help that it needs. America has also been said to get involved soon and try to donate vaccines to India since, according to the New York Times, “Fewer than 10 percent of Indians have received even one dose, and just 1.6 percent are fully vaccinated, according to a New York Times database — even though India is producing two vaccines on its own soil.” With that unsettling reality, the Biden administration is said to currently be working on a plan to help India, as well as trying to keep America from falling into the same pattern as India. Which begs the question, could this happen in America as well?
