As everyone knows, ChatGPT is a huge website for cheating, but is it really all that bad? ChatGPT is defined as, “A natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows you to have human-like conversations and much more with the chatbot. The language model can answer questions and assist you with tasks, such as composing emails, essays, and code.” Sabrina Ortiz ChatGPT coder says. This website is a tool, but it can be misused from time to time.
For some students, ChatGPT is used to help understand writing and the concept of tones and grammar.
Victoria Reynolds Class of 2027, says, “I was worried when I first heard of ChatGPT but when I struggled online with school and my teacher was not able to answer questions, I had been learning about written tone or punctuation. I would write quick stories so that I could understand any topics I was struggling with.” ChatGPT sounds quite helpful for students, and they can really benefit from it, but do our teachers feel the same?
ChatGPT could be a beneficial thing for teachers, such as how Mr. Yeh AP Computer Science Teacher states,
“ChatGPT (and other Al sources) are an interesting study now. They do certainly provide a way for students to generate content that is not their own, be it for coursework or other. However, it also provides an amazing learning opportunity and a fantastic resource for practicing problems, explanations, examples, etc. I would not say it disrupts my teaching process now and, while it has the potential to, I feel I am also able to use it to enhance my own teaching and better the learning experiences of my students.”
Brain x. Chen College student states, “Personally, yes, I used and experimented with ChatGPT, and it is extremely useful for assignments. Not just because it answers all your questions that you ask, but it destroys the use of tutors. However, it should be noted that it can be used productively but unethically, because it is easier to cheat and just copy whatever Al is providing.” The temptation from ChatGPT to cheat can be a huge influence on how student use the websites.
But some students do avoid ChatGPT due to the rumors and things they hear from it. Brooklyn Lewis Class of 2027, says, “I didn’t hear about ChatGPT until I was in school. The teacher was talking about it. I looked it up and saw all the complaints. I stay away from it as it is a website for plagiarism and was used for mainly bad things.” ChatGPT is shown to be a neutral tool but when used with certain intentions it has different outcomes as a student or teacher coming to learn can serve as a learning aid, but using to cheat or plagiarize isn’t good for anyone.
