Coronado has fulfilled the excitement surrounding the football team so far. Every week, the community of Coronado eagerly anticipates the thrilling match-ups led by the 2nd-year Head Coach Robert Leboeuf (Biff). However, for the past 11 years, the football team has not been invited to the playoffs. Their last playoff matchup was against 4A Montrose in 2014, resulting in a 42-23 loss. They are looking to break this decade-long drought this year.
Despite their lack of wins, with only three victories in the past three years, the football team was underestimated by the public and some members of the student body coming into this season. The absence of belief fueled the Cougars to push toward this promising season and playoff potential.
Football is going into the second half of the 2025 fall season, and it is stacked with electrifying league games. Former head coach and now athletic director of Coronado, Monte Gutowski, spoke about why league games in 3A Southern are so important: “League games are most important because the league winner gets an automatic bid to the playoffs; they are also very competitive and crucial.” Gutowski also believes that the success of the team is very important to our community, and stated, “It’s a main event that happens every week. The student body, players, and coaches are always excited.”
Coronado High School’s football team has a distinctive style that sets it apart from other teams in the state. Unlike traditional running plays, they excel at stretching the field through the air, making it difficult for opposing teams to stop them. This offensive strategy, known as the “air raid,” was introduced by coach Biff early in the season and has proven to be highly effective. As a result, the team’s success and playoff hopes are largely attributed to this unique play.

Players have adapted well to the new strategies introduced by the revamped coaching staff. Leading tackler and senior captain, Lucky Taraborelli, expressed his admiration for Coach Biff’s influence. He highlighted Coach Biff’s teachings over the past two years, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the process rather than the outcome. Taraborelli concluded with excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to see where the air raid takes us.”
The Coronado Cougars’ offseason improvements have been evident as their journey continues. So far, their losses haven’t been more than one score against teams with above-average records. According to MaxPreps, they possess high potential, boasting one of the nation’s top offenses and averaging over 40 points per game. Additionally, the presence of talented leaders like Lucky further enhances their chances. If Coronado can secure victories in their upcoming crucial matchups, they may have the opportunity to play more games than anticipated in the near future.
