Coronado Girls Victorious at Cougar Classic

The Lady Cougars won the 10th(ish) annual Cougar Classic Track Meet with 80 pts. over cross-town rival Doherty’s 72.5 points and Elizabeth High School’s 70 points. The Cougars eked out the win, despite being without state-qualified high and triple-jumper Celia Smith, 11, out with an ankle injury. The Cougars seized the title with a decisive performance in the final event, the 4×400 relay, winning the the event by seven seconds with a time of 4:04 over the Elizabeth Cardinal’s 4:11. In the relay, Emily Ambuul, 12, clocked in a 59 second time, followed by Jeanine Smith, 11, with a 60, “Downtown” Madison Brown,12, with a 61, and Madeline Morland, 9, with a 63, the team nearly solidifying their state invitation, holding a fifth place rank in Colorado 5A state rankings. Madi Morland also placed in the girls mile, taking third with a time of 5:22. Freshman Layla Roebke took first in the two-mile with a time of 11:50, while sophomore Jaelyn Hershberger took first in girls triple jump with a jump of 35 feet 6 inches, senior Emily Ambuul took second in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 46.73, and the Cougars won the 4×800 relay. Congrats girls!
The Coronado boys took third at the Classic, only after CSML 5A counterpart Rampart and Elizabeth High School. The Cougars dominated boys relays, taking first in the 4×800 and 4×400, and third in the 4×100. Currently the boys 4×800 and 4×100 hold state qualifying times.
Coach Hugill says, “It’s always great to win our own invitational, we are really proud of our girls and boys, they fought hard until the end.”
