Superman: DC’s all-American boy scout that the world has come to know and love over time. But what if Superman wasn’t American? What if, somehow, superman’s space ship had landed in the Russian Ukraine instead of Kansas? Well, a timeline just like this is described in Mark Miller’s Superman: Red Son.

“Superman: strange visitor from another world! Who can change the course of mighty rivers and bend steel in his bare hands… And who, as the champion of the common worker, fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact. Superman: Pride of the Soviet state, symbol of our military might. Let our enemies beware: there is only one superpower now.”

Superman: Red Son by Mark Miller, Dave Johnson, and Kilian Plunkett delves into an alternate world in which instead of landing in Kansas and being found and raised by the Kent family, he crash lands in the Soviet Ukraine and is raised by poor farmers. Instead of his normal enemies such as Darkseid, Doomsday, and Solomon Grundy, he fights the world powers that oppose Socialism. Lex Luthor, still his arch-nemesis, fights along the United States of America to try and eradicate Superman from the face of the world. He, along with other U.S. government officials believe that Superman should not be meddling in human affairs.

“The concept eliminates all preconceptions of the American view of superheros,” said Coronado Cybrarian Mr. Cox of the graphic novel.
