After a perfect record in the regular season and a one-loss Regional tournament, the Coronado boy’s tennis #2 Doubles team of Tucker Travins, 10, and Reilly Fredell, 9, is competing at the State Tennis Tournament.

The boys had a rough go in the first round, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Regis Jesuit’s Evan Nuss and Emilio Gonzales-Cruz, who later made their way into the finals, yet to be played.  Coach Tyler Philipsen said of the boys’ loss, “They played REALLY well, probably the best I’ve seen them play all season.  When you get down here though, the margin of error is minuscule, even at 2 doubles.”

After losing in the first round, the Cougar boys could have been done.  However, with Regis continuing to win, the fresh-soph duo qualified for the playback round.  When Regis beat Mountain Vista’s tandem of Collin Bean and Tommy Hipp, Travins and Fredell knew they were in and that they would face off against the Mountain Vista boys.

Keeping up their excellent level of play, The Cougars took the match quickly 6-2, 6-4.

Now, the #2 doubles team is playing Fairview’s Beck Chrisbens and Andy Wu, who also lost to Regis in the semi-finals 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.  If our guys can hold on for the win, they will be in the 3rd place match against either Fossil Ridge or Cherry Creek’s team playing in the other playback semifinal.

Update: The Cougars finished the season with a hard-fought battle in the playback semifinals against Boulder’s Fairview, ultimately defeated 6-1, 6-3, by the school’s  Chrisbens/Wu pairing.

Great job Tucker and Reilly! Congrats to the entirety of the Coronado men’s tennis teams on a sucessful season!
