Over the past week the 5-15 Coronado men’s basketball team picked up a definitive win against Pomona and a disappointing loss against Palmer and near even closer to the postseason as their try to gain their place.

Pomona

With several outstanding performances by the Cougars, Coronado’s game against Pomona was a great home victory. Senior Joey Callan led the team with 16 points as well as contributing 8 rebounds. Callan said about the game: “The Pomona game was the best game we have played all year. We all played with intensity and were in sync.” The Cougars truly shone in the game on 1/2, four players reaching double digits in points: Ashton Rogers,11, Jaydon Lewis, 12, Elijah Clanton, 12, and Ashton Rogers, 11. Jareth Morey also had a stellar defensive game, accumulating four blocks and eight rebounds. By the second quarter the Cougars were unstoppable, holding Pomona to only four points over the course of the quarter, opening up their lead to 33-19. The Cougars kept their momentum rolling during the next half, cruising to a 74-55 win.

Palmer

In the next game, however, the Cougars could not keep their momentum rolling from one of their best games of the season. Away at the Terror gym, the Cougars struggled to start in the first quarter and scored only 3 points to Palmer’s 16. However, with solid effort from Ashton Rogers, who scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds over the course of the game, Coronado fought back in the second quarter, narrowing their deficit to a mere three points. The Cougars matched the Terrors in points in the 3rd quarter with a strong effort by Jareth Morey with 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 8 points, as well as Joey Callan with 4 steals. However, in a dismal fourth quarter the Cougars could not keep up with Palmer, and finished the game 35-51. The team was disappointed with the loss, given that they have beaten the Terrors handily before. Ashton Rogers said, “The Palmer game was worst game that we have had all year. We were all off and didn’t play at our full potential.”
