Celia Smith has left her mark on Coronado High School in her four years as a student athlete. In both basketball and track and field, her leadership and talent shines through in her success.

On the basketball court, Celia has made a huge impact since she began playing varsity her sophomore year. In her final basketball season as a Cougar this winter, Smith scored 99 points and had 20 rebounds, and has led the team in both points and rebounds since her junior year. It was stay in shape for basketball , in fact, why Celia decided to go out for the track team her sophomore year, and discovered her incredible talent at the sport.

Celia has developed into a phenomenal jumper in her two years as a track and field athlete, and has such talent that she qualified for state in triple jump in her first year competing. In the 2015-2016 season, she managed to improve even further, and by the end of the season had improved her long jump from 14’5.5” to 17’9”, culminating in a 9th place finish at state. Last year, in the 2015-2016 season, Smith placed 3rd at state in high jump with a height of 5’3.5”, improving on her eighth place finish as a sophomore. Further, in her first year of triple jump, also during the 2015-2016 season, Smith posted the 7th best distance in 5A during the season, and placed 17th at state.

As for this season, Smith hopes to “win state for high jump and place in the top eight for triple and long jump”. After high school, Celia will continue her track career at the collegiate at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), for whom she signed her National Letter of Intent last November. On why UCCS was right choice for her, Smith reflected, “When you are looking at colleges people always tell you to choose the one that feels right, and I had visited a few other colleges before I visited UCCS, but once I visited there I felt at home.” Her “strong work ethic, advantageous height, and athleticism”, commended by Coronado jumping coach and physical education teacher Curt Christensen, will continue lead her to greater heights as Smith pursues her goals both this season and in the future.

Keep up the great work Celia!
