Make the Future Brighter - Join Future Problem Solvers

Gaby Stenholm, Staff Writer

Are you looking to make a global difference in years to come?  Do you crave an outlet for creativity and collaboration combined?  Future Problem Solvers may be the club for you.  For the past 12 years, Coronado has been home to a small but mighty team of thinkers dedicated to making the future a brighter place. Future Problem Solvers is a cooperative group that focuses on finding solutions to potential and current global issues through writing and service projects.  Coronado’s FPS team has represented Colorado at the club’s international conference for seven consecutive years, and is starting up the 2017-2018 school year with hopes of making it eight!  The “applicable and relevant” nature of FPS allows students to “foster creativity, boost academic performance, and have a new perspective on handling challenges” says Joshua Sun, 12, a seasoned member of the club since middle school.

Future Problem Solvers are given two hours in competition to analyze a futuristic disaster, involving anything from genetic modification to disappearing languages, before formulating a conceivable solution.  They also make time in their own community to address issues being faced by individuals today.  The process may be complex, but by tackling potential scenarios of future change as well as taking action in their own school, FPSers aim to make both the present and future “inclusive and supportive” of all individuals, says Josh.  For example, FPS collaborated this year with Coronado’s Gay Straight Trans Alliance in order to establish Coronado’s first gender-neutral restroom.  The team took this project to an international conference in Wisconsin, an experience that Josh describes as “very memorable, because [the team] got to see people from all over the world come together” to support marginalized groups.

FPS cannot wait to tackle the world’s obstacles further this year, and, according to Josh, continue to “solve tomorrow’s problems”.  So if your passion for innovation needs a place to shine, contact Mrs. Schulzki at [email protected], or visit her at the north end of the library.
