Michael Strikes With a Bowling Scholarship
October 30, 2017
When you’re a senior, college applications are all the buzz and when it comes to scholarships, many students are just vying to get one. In fact, only about 2% of high school athletes are offered scholarships, and a number of full rides are even smaller.
When people refer to sports scholarships, the most common to pop into head are usually track, football, soccer, et cetera. Senior Michael Bauers has a different story, though. He was able to snag a full ride scholarship to Robert Morris University with an unlikely sport – bowling. And despite Michael not taking the scholarship, it’s still certainly an impressive and quite unique feat.
Michael wasn’t the first person in his family to bowl, though. His father bowled through high school and eventually joined a league. “I was always at the bowling alley because of it and I eventually got into it myself,” he said about the topic. Michael, who’s been playing for the last 10 years, joined the school’s team and did competitions with them.
In fact, he found out about the scholarship at last year’s state competition in Grand Junction which brought him to Chicago where he tried out for RMU’s coach. He was later offered the scholarship. So what’s next for Michael? Even though he is not actually taking the scholarship, he still has plans to continue bowling throughout college at CSU while majoring in computer science.
