Cougars Lose to Lancers and Triumph Over Terrors
Cougar Hoops split on the week.
January 29, 2018
Coronado men’s basketball team had a challenging week: they went head-to-head with the Liberty Lancers, losing by just 10 points with a final score of 61-71. A few days later, our boys faced our West-Side rivals in a double header, the Palmer High Terrors and came out victorious with a finishing score of 53-40.
In the first game against the Lancers, this was an expected loss considering the fact that Liberty is ranked as a top ten team in 5A. Despite this, our boys shot extremely well, over the course of the entire game 8 three-pointers were made by the Cougars. Senior Ashton Rogers claims that the team tried to get the Lancers’ state rank out of their heads so they could focus on what they were doing well as a team. In particular, Rogers shot well, scoring 20 points in total, his second highest of the season.
In a West-Side match up, the stakes are going to inevitably feel higher. On Saturday, January 20th, the Cougars faced one of Coronado’s biggest rivals, Palmer. In contrast to their last game, our boys pulled out a win against the Terrors ending over 10 points ahead. Rogers spoke well of his teammates, noting that their defense did a great job by keeping the other team to just 40 points.
Due to the fact that his double-header was on a Saturday night, there was an especially large turnout for the student section. To all you die-hard Cougs– your support does not go unnoticed! Rogers commented on having such a fantastic fan base, “having a big student section definitely pumps us up more. It gives us a true home court advantage and almost makes it feel like we have an extra man.”
Make sure to congratulate the basketball team on their win and catch their next home game versus Fountain Fort Carson on February 6th!
