How to Start a Club

David Sicurello, Staff Writer

One of Coronado’s greatest strengths is its extracurricular participation in sports and in clubs. Over 40 clubs keep the campus alive before, during, and after every school day to unite students by hobbies and interests!

Several clubs have been around for many years, like the newspaper club and Cougars Care. Others have been on and off between school years. Some clubs have come up yearly, or even within the school year, like the new Black Student Union and the Ping Pong Club.

If you believe that you can bring something new to the school’s extracurricular scene, there is a process to make it happen. Year-round, applications are available in the administration office, on them are to be listed:

  • Name of club, student applicant, and staff adviser

The staff adviser is any teacher who is willing to sponsor the club’s activities.

  • Times, days, and location of meetings

For optimal accessibility to students, the established regular times should be before or after school, or in the lunch hour. Often, the location is a room assigned to the staff adviser for the given hour.

  • Description of the club’s goals and activities

A concise and attractive statement will set your club out among the dozens of others listed.

  • Student- and teacher-signed agreement to club regulations, and admin approval

The student responsible for the club is expected to keep a report form for the date, attendance, and activity of each meeting, submitted to the administration every semester. At the end of the process is approval or denial from the school principal or from another administrator on his behalf.

If all comes together and your club is established, don’t drop the ball yet! Posters, Cougar Daily articles, and even conversations with classmates will promote awareness of your club.
