Set Up Camp for High Trails!

Mohss Elaine, Staff Writer

Do you have what it takes to be a High Trails counselor? Are you not sure what it takes to be one? Here’s everything you need to know!

High Trails Camp is an outdoors camp that teaches elementary school students about different parts of Colorado’s diverse history, renewable energy sources, and gives children outdoor experiences. The camp takes place for three days, and contains different activities for the campers to experience. The camp is located in Florissant, Colorado.

Camp counselors at High Trails will have to be able to generally lead, in addition to having good problem solving skills, and the abilities to work with children and learn how to do activities quickly. The entire camp is outdoors, teaching science and history with physical activities along the way.

Coronado science teacher and LINK advisor Mrs. Schlieker will be collecting applications for 2017 High Trails counselors. Schlieker says of the counselors’ duties, “they’re going to help the kids load onto the buses at Chipeta, they’re going to ride the buses with the kids up there, they’ll unload the buses with the kids, they’ll participate in every activity, whether it is a game, a meal, or an arts and crafts activity. Leading the discovery groups, what teams the kids will be set into. They’ll be working 100% of the time. Completely on, no phones, no homework. Nothing.”

“It all outdoors. Science, history, so whether it is hiking, prospecting, which is where the kids gather minerals, or learning about Ute Indians, homesetting. Just about everything will be outdoors. They’ll also learn about energy. In that one, they’re working on learning about solar and wind energy. I’m excited for them to start learning about it.”

The introductory meeting for High Trails counselors was on 3/15. However, Mrs. Schlieker will be taking applications for High Trails through 3/23. The duties of High trails counselors are easier if applicants are in Link Crew, though all are encouraged to attend. Link Crew is a club for those who feel they can lead, communicate, and be prepared to help other people. “Being a Link leader gives them [students] a better opportunity to go,” said Schleiker. Schlieker says she needs to know if an applicant is “conscientious, if they have integrity…[and if she] can trust them.” Schlieker continued, “being in Link Crew is probably the most important thing that I need. That isn’t to say that I don’t let other people come, but the application progress is just a lot harder.”

High Trails applications will be accepted until Spring Break, so get your applications in quickly! Mrs.Schlieker runs both the Link Crew club and class, which is an all-year elective. Please see Mrs.Schlieker or Ms. Vatalaro for more information on how to get into Link Crew! We hope to see you in Link Crew, and at High Trails!
