Cougars Track and Field took a trip down to La Junta Thursday and Friday, 4/19 and 4/20, for the La Junta Tigers meet. Girls ran on Thursday and boys ran Friday. Both days were extremely windy but the Cougars pushed through with both the boys and the girls winning the meet and taking home two first place trophies! The boys finished the meet with a total of 109 points and the girls finished with a total of 140 points. The girl Cougars ran their hardest and earned themselves first place. However, because it was so windy, any wind over 2.0 mph at the back of the runners is considered and advantage and the results during the 100 dash, 200 dash, hurdles, triple jump, and long jump don’t count for state. Despite this, the track team still ran great races.

Tinah Muhammed, 9, placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.01 seconds. Faith Roth, 11,  placed second in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:35 minutes and Chloe Cassens, 12, placing in third, .56 seconds behind faith. Taylor Dutton, 12, placed second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:51 and Chloe Cassens, 12, placed third, three seconds behind Taylor. A Coronado Cougar took first place in the 3200 meter run, Grace Abernethy, 10, with a time of 13:31 minutes! Alison Ambuul, 10, also took first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50 seconds.

Coronado took second in the 4 by 100 meter relay with an overall time of 54.16 second and placed third in the 4 by 200 meter relay with an overall time of 1:57 minutes. In the 4 by 400 meter relay, Coronado placed second with an overall time of 4:21 minutes. The Cougars placed first in the 4 by 800 meter relay with an overall time of 10:58 minutes! Finally, the Cougars placed second in the 800 sprint medley with a time of 1:58 minutes.

In field events, Jaelyn Hershberger, 12, placed first in long jump with a jump of 16’ 6.50’’ and she placed first in triple jump as well with a jump of 34’ 7.50”! Mallory comments on how she felt about this, “I feel really good about  my new personal record and it was really surprising because it was such a windy day, but the wind also helped some. Three other girls PRed and that was very exciting!” Mallory comment on her goals for the rest of the season, “I’m hoping to make it to state. It would be fun to make state because I would get an extra week for the season, I love my team and I love throwing so it would be fun to compete alongside them for another week!”

On Friday, the boys scored a first place win as well. Again, because of the wind, if the wind is over 2.0mph the results in the 100, 200, hurdles, long jump and triple jump don’t count for state. Despite this, the boys ran very well. Justin Dwinell, 12, placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.56 second and also placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.66 seconds. Christian Lesser, 12, placed fourth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.64 seconds. Ben Swanson, 11, placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07 minutes. Charlie Schroeder, 10, placed fourth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:06 minutes. A cougar win was Conor Strizich placing first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:52 minutes.  Conor comments on the meet, “La Junta is one of my favorite meets and I’m glad they didn’t cancel it. The wind was tough to run through, but everyone on the track experienced the same obstacle. The race was challenging but still fun.”

Ben Tonneson, 10, placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.22 seconds. The Coronado 4 by 400 meter relay team placed fourth with an overall time of 3:47 minutes. Coronado placed 5th in the 4 by 800 meter relay with an overall time of 10:12 minutes.
