Coronado’s halls are filled with students of all talents, from sports to math to music, and CHS is proud to call these students their own. Sadie Enoch (10) has found one of her passions in photography and her skill in the art form has brought its many opportunities.

Last year, Sadie captured an image of a fist punching through water, and the photograph, titled Breaking Through has made it farther than she would have ever thought in the artistic world. Mrs. Foos explains that, “each year, Colorado had over 6,000 pieces of art from approximately 2,200 students that are digitally submitted for the statewide art exhibition.” The selected works are put on display at the History Colorado Center and Sadie’s photograph will be a part of the display, opening February 15. “Judges look for work that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision,” and Enoch’s Breaking Through possesses these aspects.

Sadie’s photograph has been selected to receive a Scholastic Gold Key Award; works that are selected for this are nationally judged by “an impressive panel of creative-industry experts to receive National Medals and Special Awards.” To create the picture and the intensity that Enoch was searching for when capturing the moment the fist hit the water, it took a lot of lighting and timing perfection. Sadie explained that for the technical aspect “was a lot of setup and it took a really long time. [She] had to find the fish tank and then to freeze the splash, and make it clear, [she] had to have the flash go off at the right time.” With all of these various aspects going towards the “perfect” picture, it took Sadie around 500 takes to find the one that captured the look she was going for.

Even with all of the work put into taking the photograph and then editing it, Sadie never thought that her picture would make it this far. In June 2019, the National medalists will be recognized at the National Show taking place at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Wish Sadie good luck and be sure to congratulate her on this prestigious award as well!
