Drive Smart

Drive Smart began on Nov. 16 and lasted the entirety of the week. Drive Smart week is provided by Student Council, mainly student body vice president Allison Hill, 12.
The week began with Council handing out various Drive Smart-themed knick-knacks, such as thumb rings, screen cleaners, lip balm and lanyards to students who agreed to sign a contract to safe driving. This continued onto Wednesday, as council continued to promote the message of safety.
The annual Drive Smart assembly was on Thursday morning, a split assembly taking place during third period. This year’s guest speaker was Joel Feldman, who committed to ending distracted driving after his daughter, Casey Feldman, was struck and killed by a distracted driver at the age of 21.
Instead of only focusing on drunk driving, Feldman talked extensively on distracted driving, as it is a bigger problem in the high school age group. He explained the negative side effects of multi-tasking in the car, including activities such as texting, talking on the phone, talking to passengers, eating, doing makeup and changing the radio.
Feldman showed multiple videos, including a video of him, his wife and the friends of his daughter speaking about her and her death. In this video, they too made the pledge to drive safely.
While some Drive Smart activities were unfortunately cancelled due to the weather, the week ended with a bang. Council and RXP Radio created a joyous atmosphere in the courtyard during both lunches for all students to enjoy and as a reminder to Drive Smart(ly).
