You may have noticed that there is a cold circulating through Coronado, and chances are you’ve had symptoms of sickness yourself. The good news is, that after interviewing several afflicted students we learned what exactly the cold was, and how to lessen its impact.
“Yeah, I’ve noticed the sickness going around the school. I was sick a few days ago, I went to bed a little rough; and when I woke up the next morning I was completely congested and I had a sore throat,” said Mr. Dubois .
Some of the most common symptoms we’ve found students to have are: nasal/chest congestion, headaches, sore throat, and fatigue. More severe symptoms include chest pressure, nausea, and fevers. If you are experiencing some of the harsher symptoms, go see the school nurse; and if they worsen, contact your family practitioner.
Remember that for every day you miss of school, you get a day to make up the work you’ve missed.
“If it gets to the point where we’re missing almost entire classes, were going to stop teaching new material to the kids that are present. It’s not very productive to only have half of a class caught up on new material where the other half is behind. In place of continuing lessons, we will have the teachers do some enrichment and review days, which will not only hurt the teaching curriculum but hurt the students academically, as well,” said Mr. Dubois.
Of course there are steps that you can take to help prevent getting sick.
“The obvious ones are: don’t share, wash your hands, drink water, and try to refrain from touching people that are sick, and touching people if they are already sick- meaning don’t go hugging/ kissing your friends and significant others,” said Deb Silibia, the school nurse.
If you are already affected, there are steps that you can take to achieve a higher level of relief. Some precautions you can take include:
-Boosting vitamin C intake
-Stay hydrated
-To monitor any medicine intake (remember you can overdose with even common cold medicines)
-Get plenty of sleep (doctors recommend 8-9 hours of sleep every night)
-Try to keep your stress level low as poor mental health can contribute to poor physical health
– Stay home if you can, because it’s better to stay home rather spread sickness at school
– If you are in sports, try to take it easy.
Last of all- remember that sickness doesn’t last forever, so keep your chin up.
