Talent Shines at Coronado’s Open Mic Night

September 22, 2016 at 6:30 to 8 pm in the auditorium was Coronado’s quarterly Open Mic Night hosted by Mrs. Ambroz, our resident drama teacher. The event provided refreshments such as coffee, hot cocoa, and brownies for whoever wished to come. For a small fee of $4, you could enjoy a half hour of entertainment. The night also provided an opportunity to raise funds for a student artist who requires monetary donations for a visit to New York.

The individual acts that constituted the show were as notable as the event itself. Talents varied from spoken poetry to electric guitar to pantomiming. One act that particularly stood out and riled the crowd up was sophomore Dylan Carter’s bacon-based comedy. Dylan carefully explained to the audience how bacon bits are the food equivalent of fairy dust and how there will never be enough.

There was also Alex Sorrel’s performance where he sang the song “Go to the Old Pub Instead”- a so-called Irish song passed from generation to generation. The tune told the tale of a weary Irish man who decided to go out drinking when his cranky wife was having her period. The overall tone of the song was a warning, telling the men to be grateful they are not the wife in this story.

In addition there was spoken poetry. People performing were Hamish Shepherd,10, and others. And as an added surprise there was Anna Stellick, 10, and Constance Louise Pacart, a French exchange student, performing a pantomime labeled “A Haunted House” where they discovered a magic crystal ball, fenced, and fled from malevolent ghouls.

Hamish Shepherd, a participant and audience member of Open Mic Night, says ,“Open Mic Night is truly reflective of all the talent in Coronado, and there is an excess of it.”

The next show will be a “Christmas Carol Coffee House” on November, 29 at 6:30, and new talent is welcomed. As Mrs. Ambroz noted before the show, “Some of you are going to sound like novices, and some of you are going to sound like masters, but you have to start somewhere.” Open Mic Night is an environment where talent is supposed to be encouraged, so do not fear not having enough of it. Anyone is welcome to come, no matter how wacky and weird your gift may be.
