Roller Derby is not for the faint of heart. It’s a fiercely competitive contact sport, played by two teams of 14 players. The games are made up of two thirty minute halves: In each half there are two minute jams where four blockers and one jammer from each team are on the track. In these jams, the jammers attempt to pass the opposing team’s blockers to score points, while the blockers do everything in their power to stop the jammer.

Ivey Wohl, a sophomore at Coronado high school, has been playing for the past ten years. She skates for Rocky Mountain Rollerpunks, a Denver based team. She says of her sport, “I consider my teammates to be my sisters and after every new tournament or game I have made new friends and new people to learn from! It’s also super fun to knock a bunch of people down.”

Ivey has shown to be a very valuable skater, and was even chosen to be on Junior Team Colorado, a team made up of the top 14 skaters in the state. She has also received an invitation to try out for Junior Team USA. With her years of experience and skill, Ivey is sure to continue to improve and add to her impressive resume of accomplishments, this season and in seasons to come.
