Freshmen orientation day turned out to be a huge success, with mentors and students having a great time together. The day opened with an assembly, introducing the freshman to some of the staff at Coronado and the MAB Mentors. With a skit about stereotypical cliques in schools, and a discussion about what to expect the mentors took over.

“I liked being able to see all my teachers, and it was really helpful to have all the mentors around to tell me where I was,” said Arman Mirhossaini, 9.

After 20 minutes of name games, the freshmen were either given a tour of campus or had the opportunity to participate in team building activities on the football field. The tour gave students the chance to see the school before all the other students arrived, and even allowed them to meet a few key teachers that they would be seeing their freshman year. Those not on the tour worked with their teams to win jungle themed competitions, and reflect on how to work better as a group.

“The mentors were really good at making you feel welcome into the school and they made the day much easier,” said Samuel Longwell, 9.

Following a few hours of group activities the groups were either sent to a lunch or treated to a routine by the cheerleaders and a demonstration by the robotics team. A mock schedule began after, letting students meet each teacher on their schedule and become comfortable finding their way around. The day concluded with a thank you to the mentors, the staff, and the freshmen for making it an amazing time. With a new knowledge of the school and how the next four years would work, mentors said goodbye to their freshmen, encouraging them to look to them and staff for help as the school year went on.
