“Live a life you will remember” – The Passing of Avicii

Gabriel Maldonado, Staff Writer

On April 20th, 2018, Tim Bergling, better known as “Avicii,” was found dead in his hotel room in Muscat, Oman.

Tim rose to prominence as a DJ under the name “Avicii” in 2011, when he released the house classic “Levels”. From there on, he combined folk music with electronic, allowing inspirational lyrics and guitar to combine with his soaring progressive house melodies. The new combination certainly had an impact: he won grammy awards for best dance track. He released two major albums, “True” and “Stories”, as well as four EPs, and forty eight singles. He toured all around the world and had millions of fans, with his songs on Spotify garnering over 1 billion plays.

Many of those fans are remembering him and his music around the world, with his songs coming back up on the charts and several fellow DJs playing his tracks during their sets in his memory. Church bells in Stockholm, Sweden, played the melodies of his popular songs as a tribute to his work. The Electronic Dance Music community, as well as the general music community, has been saddened by his passing.

Three days after the star’s death, his family released a statement, saying, “we would like to thank you for the support and the loving words about our son and brother. We are so grateful for everyone who loved Tim’s music and have precious memories of his songs.” Through appreciative of the support from his fans, the family  also continue to ask for privacy.

While the family has asked for privacy, authorities did rule out “criminal suspicion” in his death. Otherwise, the jury is out as to how he passed, at least publicly. Some speculate that it was due in part to pancreatitis caused by drinking, which caused him to stop touring in 2014, as well as other health problems. Some also speculate that the extreme workload which international touring requires took a heavy toll on his body.

Tim Bergling will be remembered as a great producer and DJ, for songs that were continuously uplifting and different. In one of his famous songs, “The Nights”, it says, “One day, you’ll leave this world behind, so live a life you will remember.” One can definitely say that he did lead a life worthy of remembering.
