The boys’ soccer season is off to a promising start this year! Led by captains Hayden Field and Weston Rubio, the team is striving to beat their 5-10 record from last year. The Cougars are faced with a tough game schedule including matches against Liberty, Doherty, and Pine Creek, but they are confident; Hayden Field, 12, says “I think we’ll have a positive record this year!”

This is the second year of coaching varsity for Coach Eddie Hurt as well as other new members of the coaching staff. “Last year with a new coaching staff was a transition year but now that the players know the system and they know the expectations and a lot of them have kind of bought into the system, I’m excited to see how much we can grow this season with that consistency,” says Coach Yeh, one of the assistant Varsity coaches.

Coach Yeh confirms that “we graduated a lot of seniors last year, but obviously when you lose that experience it opens up opportunities for other players so I’m excited to see some of the younger players step up and fill those gaps and prove to us and their teammates that they belong on that field. We have a really big freshmen class and some talented players that have a lot of potential and room for growth but are already showing that they can step onto that field as a starter for JV or Varsity and we’ve got a strong senior class leading the way.”

The team started the preseason a few weeks before school started with 7 am conditioning as well as a week with two practices per day right before season started, so they are in shape and ready to take on the competition. Players to watch this year include defender Dylan Baumgarte, 12, midfielders Weston Rubio, 12, David Murillo, 11, and Jesus Yepez, 12, and forwards Hayden Field, 12, and Lalo Castaneda, 12. The Cougars won their first game against Falcon 1-0 with David Murillo assisting Hayden Field in the first goal of the season.

The next two games of the season are at home (Garry Berry South), so mark the below dates on your calendar and come show some support for your fellow Cougars!
