UFC 284 took place in Perth, Australia on February 11th, 2023. The matchup was between number one ranked pound for pound fighter Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski who is also the undisputed featherweight (145lb) champion of the world. His opponent, Islam Makhacev the lightweight (155lb) champion of the world and prodigy of the Khabib Nurmagomedov, has taken over the UFC with his dominant performances. The two fighters shared the cage at 155lb’s with Makhacev’s belt on the line and Volkanovski’s rank on the line.

The five round championship fight was one for the ages with each round being closely contested. The fight ended up going to a decision with Makhacev edging it out with the judges and remaining the lightweight champion. This decision did not come without controversy though with fans, fighters and experts around the world sharing their opinion on the fight. Nate Diaz tweeded shortly after the fight saying, “Yeah right Islam got his a** whooped” and others like Ryan Switzer’s commenting “There’s absolutely no way that was a unanimous decision. That’s Disgraceful.”

Debates on the fight are still going on but as for right now Alexander Volkanovski remains the pound for pound number one fighter a whole nine days after the fight despite the loss. Rematch negotiations are being talked about and the fighting world is expecting another great fight between these two champions
