Over the past 12 years, Coronado High School’s art department has grown from a half-time position into one of the largest and most successful programs in District 11. Once limited in options, students can now take ceramics, painting, drawing, jewelry, photography, printmaking, computer art, and multiple AP-level classes.
The change began when Coronado graduate Mrs. Foos was hired to build the program. “It allows us to offer more classes than any of the other schools in the district,” she explained, crediting student interest and supportive administrators for the department’s growth. Additional teachers, including Mr. Magnuson and Ms. Carnevale, were added to meet rising demand.
Most recently, Ms. Kuykendall joined the staff, returning to her alma mater after teaching at Pine Creek. Inspired by her own mentors, she said, “Coming to school and being around my teachers was always one of my favorite parts of my day…how could I not want that for other people?”
Through dedicated teachers, growing course offerings, and strong student participation, Coronado’s art department has become a cornerstone of the school’s identity.
