It is unacceptable that partisan bickering has brought our government to a standstill, punishing ordinary Americans while politicians point fingers at their competitors to blame for issues, without taking initiative on the matter at hand.
While lawmakers argue in Washington, it’s federal workers and communities across the nation who are being affected the most by this senseless shutdown. Many federal employees are forced to work without pay, and millions of Americans are noticing their SNAP benefits being cut. This outcome is not an inescapable crisis; it is merely a result of political gridlock and the government’s failure to take action to end the shutdown.
Understanding how we reached this point is crucial to holding those accountable for ending it. Congress failed to pass the funding bills by the deadline due to their long-standing disagreement on policy issues and spending priorities.

The longer this shutdown continues, the more detrimental its effects become, making it vital to resolve it without delay. In the near future, a significant number of duties may go undone or become vulnerable to rampant fraud or abuse. This would erode the public’s trust in the government heavily, as it details that they are unable to meet the needs of the American people. It’s quite clear that a resolution to this issue is necessary, as continued inaction could lead to the nation’s collapse.
Mr. Ziser, Government Teacher at CHS, stated a possible solution: “An avenue to get out of a shutdown is for lawmakers to find areas where republicans may be willing to defy the leader of their party, as they so strongly agree that he is wrong on a particular issue or series of issues.” Such bipartisan spirit is necessary to break through the partisan standoff and put the needs of the country over the loyalty of one’s party.
This prolonged standoff has proven to help no single person, and we must put an end to it. It is time for our leaders to put aside their differences and work together to put our nation back together from the chaos this shutdown has entailed.
