The Choir program at Coronado High School is seeing new energy under first year Coronado teacher, Mr. Ferguson, following a successful concert held on March 11, 2026, in the school’s auditorium.
Ferguson, a professional folk and jazz musician with over 20 years of experience teaching singing and instruments, said his approach centers on both musical excellence and purpose. He emphasized that “excellent work is important” while also “staying in touch with the purpose of music.” The recent concert reflected that focus. Ferguson said he believed the performance “went great” and that the choir “sounded excellent,” while also noting there are still areas to improve going forward.
Since taking over the program, Ferguson has introduced more structure to rehearsals. He explained that “more structure and keeping everyone working hard” has helped improve overall performance. Students have responded positively, especially as the semester has progressed. Ferguson also noted that morale has significantly improved since earlier in the year, particularly when comparing the most recent concert to earlier performances.
Preparation for the concert focus on consistent rehearsal and attention to detail. Ferguson said students practiced regularly in class and used different strategies to ensure accuracy, including technology that isolates specific vocal parts so singers can better learn their roles.
Looking ahead, Ferguson hopes to continue building both skill and enthusiasm within the group. His goals include helping students “enjoy and make great music,” while also encouraging them to improve as musicians and become more involved in the program.
The future of the choir program may also expand beyond traditional performances. Ferguson shared plans to introduce new opportunities, including a DJ and recording studio class next year, aimed at making the program more creative and exploring styles of music that are often overlooked.
With a strong concert completed and new ideas on the horizon, the Coronado choir program appears to be moving in a positive direction under its new leadership.
