Word on the street says that there is a new outbreak of a disease much like COVID. But what is it really?
Hantavirus is a rare and very serious virus that spreads to humans worldwide through contact with infected rodents, especially mice. People usually become infected by breathing in air contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, often while cleaning places like sheds, cabins, or basements.
The early symptoms of hantavirus can feel like the flu and may show as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, and nausea. As the illness gets worse, without quick treatment it can lead to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe lung disease that causes coughing and difficulty breathing.
There is currently no specific cure for Hantavirus. Doctors treat patients by providing supportive care, such as oxygen therapy, IV fluids, and, in severe cases, ventilators to help them breathe. Tricia Whittenmeyer, doctor and educator states that “Although it may be viewed as the next pandemic, one person can only contaminate 2 others, whereas during Covid, one person could contaminate 8.” Early diagnosis and medical attention can greatly improve survival.
The best way to prevent Hantavirus is to avoid contact with rodents and clean contaminated areas carefully. People should seal holes in their homes, store food properly, and disinfect rodent droppings instead of sweeping them.
