The Coronado Robotics team recently competed at the Colorado First Robotics Regional in Denver. The competition was hosted on the University of Denver campus in the Magness Arena. Over 50 teams came to the competition, with teams coming in from as far away as Florida, and even Mexico. The competition kicked off on Friday the 25th with the opening ceremony. The Coronado team had over 40 students in attendance to cheer on the drive team as they competed for the top spots. The team did well and when the time came for alliance picks, the Cougars Gone Wired got picked first by the second seed alliance. This was an incredible opportunity for the team because it meant that there was a high chance for them to make it to the semifinals.
Team 2996 was eliminated in the quarter finals after having lost one match and was later disqualified due tipping over an opposing team’s robot. The team suffered from low morale up until the awards ceremony. Coronado team 2996 was recognized for winning the 2016 Engineering Inspiration Award. The award, sponsored by NASA, recognizes teams from all over the world who exemplify the principles of science, technology, engineering, and math. The award is not only a prestigious honor, but it also qualifies the recipient team for the world Championships in St. Louis, including the $5,000 entry fee.
The First Robotics Championship, hosted in St. Louis, offers the opportunity for teams from all over the world to get together and compete. There are many social events such as the Robo-Prom which is a prom put on for all the robotics teams.
Overall, championship offers a unique experience that is not found anywhere else in the world. Wish the Coronado robotics team, Team 2996, good luck as they compete against the top teams from all over the world!
