In an exceptionally close fourth game of the season, the Coronado Varsity Volleyball Team was narrowly defeated by the 5A Colorado Springs Metro League Rampart Rams. Coronado fought for four sets, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, and finally, in a heartracer of a match 25-27.

Leading the Cougars was Mara Abernethy, 11, with 15 kills this match, and 41 total for the season. Outsides Mallory Brown,11, and Jaelyn Hershberger, 11, contributed 10 kills each. Junior libero Ashlynn Garcia, 11, racked up 24 digs, the most of her varsity career. On the opposing side, Taylor Sibert supported a strong Rampart offense, racking up 16 kills total.

Led by first year coach Stormie Wells, the Junior-heavy team is focusing on moving forward as a team. According to Mara Abernethy, “The Rampart match was a great challenge for us, though we would prefer to have preferred to have won, often you learn more than losses than from wins and we feel so fortunate to be playing such awesome in-league competition.” Stormie Wells echoed this mindset, saying, “Winning and losing is sometimes very much out of our control, but supporting each other and working hard to get 1% better each day is something that we can certainly influence.” One thing that is definitely clear is that this year’s team is marked with a strong sense of cooperation and successfully playing as a team.

The Cougars are competing next in the Elizabeth Tournament at Elizabeth High School on 9/10.

The Cougars’ next match is on 9/15 at 6pm.
