Away at Fountain Fort Carson, the Cougars found their rhythm and took home their twelfth win of the season three sets to one. Even with the majority of varsity sick and coughing,  the Cougars left the match with 36 kills and 11 aces as a team. Contributing greatly was Mallory Brown, 11, who had 11 kills and 5 aces, her highest number of aces in a game over the course of her varsity career.

Other admirable performances in the match were from varsity veterans Mara Abernethy and Jaelyn Hershberger, both juniors, with a respective nine and seven kills apiece. On the defensive front, Bethany Heitland and Ashlynn Garcia both surpassed 10 digs each.

Struggling with widespread illness, the Cougars dropped one set to the Trojans 25-15. About the match Mallory Brown commented, “Even though we had our ups and downs and we were trying out a new rotation, I think we did a lot of good things that game.”

Back at home for Parent Night the Cougars took on Doherty in another league match. The Cougars defeated the Spartans in three quick sets 25-15, 25-21, 25-20. Juniors Jaelyn Hershberger, Mallory Brown, and Mara Abernethy continued to produce many of the kills for the team, Hershberger with 9 kills , Brown with 7 kills, and Abernethy 6 kills. The Cougars also showed consistency in their blocking with Mara Abernethy, Cami Nelson, and Delaney St. Pierre each with two blocks. The Cougars also showed a strong defensive presence during the match, making the extra work they are putting in at practice on it worth it. Ashlynn Garcia contributed 16 digs, the most of the team’s 52 dogs on the match.

“I think Doherty was an awesome opportunity for us to implement and showcase what we’ve been working so hard on in practice, I can’t wait to see where the rest of the season takes us!” said Mara Abernethy.
