On Wednesday 1/18, the Cougars began the first of a series of due meets that could play an influential role in determining the league championships. They faced Doherty, a long time rival of Coronado. Despite their 24 – 37 loss, it was still “probably one of the most fun duals I’ve been a part of in years” said Coronado wrestling coach Mr. Burak. Adding, “we showed them some good wrestling… [I’m] incredibly proud of them because they battled and wrestled tough.”

The second of these dual meets took place on January 19, against Pine Creek. The Cougars came out victorious, with a final score of 39-30. Pins from Stephen Dabelko, 12, Alex Ainsworth, 12, Zeke Terrazas, 10, and Kj Kearns, 10, contributed to the win. Pine Creek has won the league champions for the past couple of years, making this an especially important victory, as this will give them a better chance at the city championships this year. “We had a lot of guys that didn’t necessarily win but they were wrestling really tough opponents and they didn’t give up a pin…  and that was really big for the team points” said Stephen Dabelko, 12, of the meet.

They’ve had a season of great improvement so far, according to Coach Burak. With impressive performances from Zeke Terrazas, 10, who defeated a state qualifier, as well as Jimmy Weaver, 12, who has placed at state in past seasons, the Cougars have managed to maintain an admirable record of 12 -3 so far. They also were able to place 5th out of 63 teams in the Northern Colorado Christmas tournament, an impressive feat. “We have a lot of guys that are wrestling well, and I think we’re peaking at the right time” said team captain, Jimmy Weaver.
