Pocket Points is the newest App sweeping through the halls of Coronado, but its  not a game or a new social media; it is a way to keep you off the phone and on task.

By tracking your location, the App detects when you are on campus and awards “Pocket Points” for time spent off of your phone by tracking the amount of time in between each time you unlock it. Users can then redeem earned points for discounts and freebies at restaurants, clothing stores and local events and activities. Generally, discounts can be earned for around twenty points at Dutch Bros, Chick-Fil-A, Panda Express, 7-11, Wendy’s, Levi’s, Forever 21, Columbia Sportswear and hundreds of more stores and restaurants around town.

Beyond the discounts, users are automatically put onto leaderboards from their school, so you can compare how well you are staying off your phone compared to your friends and compete to stay off the most. At the time of publication, Isabella Janney, 11, was in third place for Coronado and was excited. “I’m really good at it,” Janney says about staying off her phone.

Lindsey Murray, 12, says “I think it’s definitely motivation to stay off my phone in class because the app gives me rewards that save me money and are applicable to my life, also its fun to have competition between me and my friends.”

Whether you are more interested in seeing which of your friends are best at staying on task or earning discounts around town, this app seems like a great way to stay off the phone and keep focused in class!
