The Varsity Volleyball team huddling up and laying out their killer game plan!

On 9/5, the third match of the season, our favorite varsity volleyball team took home their second win of the season against Rampart High. Defeating the Rams 3 sets to 1, the Cougars marked their COS territory with ease. With 53 kills and 64 digs throughout the game, that’s the most kills and digs they’ve had so far this season.

With this solid win, the Lady Cougs went to the Elizabeth Early Bird Tournament on Saturday, 9/9, to play five matches. Their first match, against Palmer Ridge, was won by Coronado two sets to one. While the first set went to the Bears, 25-10, our girls only gained momentum in the second and third sets winning 25-17 and 15-12, respectively. By the end of the match, Palmer Ridge couldn’t seem to crack the Cougars who sunk a whopping 54 digs.

To keep their winning streak ablaze, Coronado won their second match of the day against Smoky Hill with a sweep of 2-0. With a 44.2% kill percentage, the highest of the season thus far, our ladies went into the upcoming matches with confidence, despite Mara Abernethy, 12, one of the most influential players on the team, rolling her ankle.

Woodland Park went head-to-head against Coronado in the third match of the tournament only to be shut out 2-0.

During the semi-finals against Grandview, Coronado managed yet another shut out of two sets to none. Ashlynn Garcia, 12, recounts this match as her favorite of the tournament because “there was a lot of tension on the [Grandview] side of the court and we turned that into positive energy for us”.

The Championship was a rematch for the Cougars as they faced Palmer Ridge for a second time and even with Mara out with a sprained ankle Garcia claims that “[they] played really well against PR the second time again, but [PR] ran such a fast offense that we need Mara’s blocking”. Unfortunately, the our girls lost the Championship 2-1 but played hard and we couldn’t be prouder.

Ashlynn says that the team “had to face a lot of adversity with reffing and obviously Mara getting hurt but we overcame that well and responded well.”

Mara says that “it’s just a regular sprain and I should be back by our game against Cheyenne Mountain on 9/20!”

Make sure to catch Mara and the rest of our killer team at the next volleyball game at Cheyenne Mountain, Thursday, September 21st!
