Take a Hike

Hiking is one of the hallmarks of Colorado – sun 300 days a year, plentiful trails and nature right at everyone’s back door – for many, the question is where, exactly, to go. Everyone knows about the Incline and Garden of the Gods, but here are some less-known trails to find yourself at; rated for difficulty, accessibility, and safety 1-5. On this scale, a trail rated 1 all around is the least difficult, most accessible and safe option.

Scale:

⛰ – Difficulty, 1-5

☀ – Accessibility, 1-5

☁ – Safety, 1-5

Pulpit Rock x

Located at the Austin Bluffs Open Space, this 4.4.mile loop is open year-round and offers a chance for a leisurely walk outside. Leashed dogs are welcome!

Red Rock Canyon Open Space x

Red Rock Canyon Open Space has several trails to choose from, some more adventurous than others. The hike up to the quarry from the 31st St. parking lot is a favorite, overlooking much of Manitou  Springs at the crest of the hill.

Ute Valley Park x

Ute Valley Park , with several loops available, is a great place to hike, bike, or run. The multiple entrances and mild trails make it extremely accessible, a westside location making for a good spontaneous hike with a time limit.

The Paint Mines Interpretive Park x

The paint mine park is made up of an outer loop and an inner loop. In addition to trails, the rock area is open as well, making for some colorful climbs after an hour long drive to the middle of nowhere.

Red Rocks Group Pike National Forest x

⛰⛰

☀☀

☁☁

With some more challenging uphill trails, this forest just north of Woodland Park is good for a casual but adventurous outing. Plenty of rocks are available for (safe) climbing, many of which overlook a range of the rocky mountains.

Seven Bridges x

⛰⛰

☀☀

☁☁

Featuring a waterfall and moderately trafficked trail, the Seven Bridges make for a great destination for anyone looking to get outside. Keep in mind that this trail is not marked, so stay safe out there.

Railroad Bed above Manitou Springs x

⛰⛰

☀☀☀☀☀

☁☁☁☁

The railroad bed above Manitou Springs is a relatively simple hike, despite the difficulty in actually getting there. The “trail” runs alongside old railroad tracks through Ute Pass, much of it open to a view above Highway 24. This one is recommended for more experienced hikers looking for a little adventure.

Barr Trail x

⛰⛰⛰⛰

☀☀☀☀

☁☁

Barr trail is a 23 mile out and back hike with a waterfall and heavy traffic up Pikes Peak. While we always encourage people to try new things, this trail is best done in the summer and in daylight hours. Prior experience and adequate fitness levels are advised.

Always remember to be safe, stay on the path, and keep hydrated. The Cougar Daily staff or is not responsible for any scraped knees, lost sunglasses, or bear attacks. Sunscreen, hats, and bug spray are always recommended precautions, just get out there and have fun!
