Golf kicked off their season with a win at the Lady Trojan Invitational on April 5th. The Cougars came to the green hoping to start the season strong, and they came out big: Both Kate Griffin, 10, and Madi Eurich, 12, placed in the top ten. Kate Griffin, who finished her season last year with a trip to state, was only three strokes back from the winner of the tournament, Cheyenne Mountain’s Maxine Choi, who finished eighth at state last year.

Scores:
#3 Kate Griffin +10
#7-tie Madi Eurich +19
#12 Hannah Burgess +23
#21 Anika Hagen +29

The team is coming out the gate debatably even stronger than last year: Both Griffin and Hagan finished four strokes better than the year prior. The addition of junior Hannah Burgess- who is also playing soccer this spring- to the team also aided the Cougars in their first tournament of the season.

The day on the Cheyenne Shadows golf course held many shiny moments and valuable adjustments for the Cougars: Burgess and Griffin showed their prowess at the tee, Burgess producing a multitude of lengthy and precise drives, and Griffin making smart adjustments to her drive by switching over to a hybrid instead of a driver to finetune her shot. Eurich and Hagen excelled at the other end of the green, where they both sunk several impressive puts.

Head Coach Hodge believes that Cougars have the ball in their court this season, and have a strong chance of making it to state as a team for the first time in several years. Kate Griffin believes that “the team is going to do greats things this season. In the first tournament we’ve already proved that we can hang with the top teams, and so I think that [says something].”

The win this week “[set] the team up with lots of confidence” and “[ got them] used to the pressure” of the season as well, according to Coach Hodge. Griffin echoed this optimism, and believes that the team is “going to do great things this season,” and can “definitely see a trip to state as a team in [their] future.”
