The Coronado Football team failed to hold onto a lead they had almost the entire game and lost a crusher against Mesa Ridge. The Cougars had their hands full trying to stop the run, they gave up an absurd 338 yards rushing. Giving up this many rushing yards put pressure on the offense to keep them in the game, which they did for most of the game, but the Grizzlies rushing attack was too much. The game ended with a final score of 36-33. Even though there were lots of problems on the defensive side of the ball for the Cougars, the starting quarterback Gabe Chapel, 11, did a good job limiting turnovers and not throwing an interception but he did fumble three times and lost one fumble. Even though the offense had their mistakes, it was ultimately the defense who needed to step up. Starting safety Brian Maestas, 12,talked about how the defense can improve after a lackluster couple of weeks, saying, “[there were] definitely some little mistakes we need to work on during practice. But there are mistakes on all units (defense, offense, special teams) that we need to fix as well.” Mistakes are the name of the game and if this Cougars team wants to continue to win they need to minimize their mistakes like they did the first week of the season against Cheyenne Mountain. The Cougars are looking forward to the next game against PALMER, the Cougars look to bounce back against the arch rival in a red out. The game will be played September 20th at Garry Berry at 7:00; make sure to come out and watch the Cougars fight the Terrors.
