Coronado Basketball is excited to have back its star player while entering an important stretch of the season. Lyrik Smith, Class of 2026 and starting guard of the basketball team, has played an important role when he’s on the court. He was the leading scorer on the team while averaging 22.8 per game when he was on the court for the first 8 games. Smith and the Cougars boys’ basketball team were seeing much success before Christmas break, including beating the number 2 team in the state in 5A and holding a .500 record.
Things changed dramatically for Lyrik during the winter break, as he was diagnosed with a bone infection in his pelvis. For the week of Christmas, Lyrik was placed in the hospital, having to complete several tests due to the unknown injury at the time. His mother, Rhonda Wolfe, explained that he was experiencing “extreme abdominal pain” while both walking and laying down. She talked about how she knew immediately that there was a major injury from the messages she was getting from his older brother, Realiti Smith, so she took instant action and stated, “I left work and took him straight to the Children’s Hospital ER.”
When Lyrik was asked about the most challenging part while dealing with his injury, he said, “Just wanting to play the sport I love again and the want to be able to help my team.” While he was sidelined, the rest of Lyrik’s teammates and coaches played a major role by helping Lyrik stay in a positive and hopeful mindset. “They all helped me by making sure I was good when I could not do much and making sure my mental was right,” he stated.
Despite the setbacks, his mom said she is incredibly proud of her son and how he can persevere and handle tough situations. “I’m extremely proud of Lyrik,” she stated. “Being that this infection was going to take him out of his basketball season for the second year in a row, I thought the mental aspect would have really torn him down. But once we talked to the infectious disease doctor and the orthopedic surgeon, and they explained the severity of his infection and what could happen if he didn’t rest, it was like a light switched.” She then continued to explain how much of a leader Lyrik was; he showed up to all basketball events and practices and always helped out, even from the bench.
Now making his return on the court, Smith’s presence brings more than just scoring back to the lineup; it brings resilience and leadership after missing six games. As Coronado enters a critical stretch of the season, Lyrik is ready to contribute and make up for lost time.
