How to Save the Democratic Party

The Justice Democrats Promise a Return to Liberalism

Within the Democratic Party a grassroots movement has formed known as the Justice Democrats. The formation of the group was in reaction to the 2016 presidential election and their dissatisfaction toward their candidate Hillary Clinton. To the Justice Democrats, the issue of the party is that it is overrun by corporate Democrats who have lost touch with reality and their constituency due to ideological power-worshiping and corruption. Clinton was the embodiment of corruption and dishonesty; she proclaimed her pro-LGBT stance while accepting millions of dollars from Arabic gulf state tyrannies where homosexuality is criminalized, and railed against Wall Street while accepting money from Wall Street.

The Justice Democrats run on the slogan “Democrats that represent the people, not corporations.” The movement may provide a place for the working class, Obama voters who were forced to vote Trump to protect their own interests, or for the new generation entering politics, Generation Z, with their more classical liberal views, that are displaced among their predecessors, the millennials, the super-progressives.

Their platform’s main priority is passing a constitutional amendment to end government corruption by putting an end to Super PACs and banning private donations to campaigns and politicians. Also, the group’s own candidates will be mandated by the party to not accept any private donations when elected into office. The ultimate goal would be to root out corruption from within the Democratic party.

In addition, the Justice Democrats vow to re-regulate Wall Street and hold white-collar criminals accountable. They want to reinstate the Glass-Steagall, instituted by FDR to prevent banks from engaging in the investment business.

Tax reform is also on the docket, and they would address issues such as chaining the capital gains tax to the income gains tax, increasing the estate tax, and instating the buffett rule, which would mean that the highest income bracket would have to pay 30% of their income to federal taxes.

Although a vague promise, the Justice Democrats promise to defend free speech. While they do oppose bigotry, they do not believe in de-platforming or censoring anyone. They believe in the free marketplace of ideas, and that all opinions, especially those they disagree with, should have the right to be expressed. The ascension of the Justice Democrats to greater popularity is indicative of a renaissance within our generation for more, not less speech.

In the words of the Justice Democrats, they represent the true tenets of liberalism that the Democratic party has lost touch with: they want to end unnecessary foreign wars, nation-building, and the war on drugs. The Democratic party , and to a greater extent the political establishment, is essentially fueled by the military industrial complex. In her lifelong political career, Hillary has never not voted in favor of a war, not even the disastrous Iraq war that killed millions of citizens in the name of the fantastic money-making scheme known as war. Not that war-mongering is a particularly democratic characteristic, but more or less a trait isolated to only the establishment politicians.

Of course, the movement is not going to be perfect, like any other party, there will need to be honest criticism both inwardly and outwardly. But this may be the dawn of a new hope for a generation that is entering a changing political sphere. I have hope there are more of us, who believe in this brand of liberalism that has not been marketed to us by our parents, teachers, or peers–who want freedom and liberty.
