Starting on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 4 and 5, Ms. Mooney’s Culinary Arts classes (room 403) began making bread dough, and then began baking it on Thursday and Friday, November 6 and 7. Their goal is to bake 150 loaves for Harvest of Love before the end so that the loaves can be included in care packages for families that will be delivered over Thanksgiving Break.
Students explained that they are making a wheat berry bread, and each group is making two loaves per period, baking the dough they made in the previous period. This means that each class nets about 12 loaves per period. The bread is then frozen to maintain its freshness until the food distribution takes place on Saturday, November 22.
They begin by making the dough and measuring carefully. Lahela Thompson, Class of 2027, mentioned that “Measuring is my favorite part. That, and working with people I like.” Groups then bake the bread and wrap it so that it is ready for delivery. The students were showing great self-control and not eating the delicious-smelling bread, but maybe they will get a chance to sample some once they get to loaf 151!
