Coronado High School is filled with anticipation as students prepare for this year’s musical, Newsies. From rehearsals to set design, the planning process has been full of creativity, teamwork, and excitement, giving a glimpse into everything it takes to bring a show to life.
This year’s production is directed by Ms. Glidewell, drama teacher, and stars Abigail Esparza, Class of 2026, as Medda Larkin. Newsies tells the story of a group of young newspaper sellers fighting for their rights who are full of music, energy and teamwork.

When choosing a play, Ms. Glidewell says the first step is selecting a show that fits both her students and the story she wants to tell. She explains that “you have to take into consideration things like what kind of kids you have, if there are any characters that come to mind when you think about your students. I also think about what kind of story I want to tell, and that allows me to pick the show.” Ms. Glidewell chose Newsies because it is upbeat, modern, and carries a strong message about working together to stand up for what’s right.
Planning a production like Newsies involves careful attention to both the cast and the set design. Ms. Glidwell states “I think about my cast and how I can use who I have to tell the story. I also focus on the set design because it is the most important aspect of the technical side of things. Without a set, there is no world for the newsies to sell their papers or have a strike.” Most of the planning happens outside of rehearsal time. Ms. Glidewell meets regularly with the performing arts team and other leaders to coordinate the set, rehearsal calendar, and other details. She also looks at other high school and community productions for inspiration and references the original Broadway production to guide her decision.
Being a new drama teacher adds its own set of challenges and excitement. Ms. Glidewell shared that she has “loved stepping into the role of theatre director here at Coronado. I learned so much from the students every day and I have enjoyed getting to know everyone.” Directing her first musical was nerve-wracking, but the talent of the students and the support of the performing arts team have made it a rewarding experience.
Opening night is Thursday, April 16th at 6:30 p.m., with additional performances on Friday, April 17th at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Esparza encourages everyone to come to the show, saying, “Anyone watching this show will be excited to be a part of the journey from the opening number to the glorious end.”
