The Coronado Theater Department recently closed its production of Disney’s Newsies. After 4 long months of dedication, strain, heartfelt memories, and unlikely friendships, the Department closes its big productions for the year.
Now that the show is over, the program still has work to do… STRIKE!
“We take down all the sets, put away all of the props, clean everything, and it only takes about 5 hours with everybody helping,” Kyla Johnston, Class of 2026, explains.
Before the frantic cleaning, the cast and crew participated in a long-running tradition: The Circle. Everyone gathers in one big circle on stage to eat pizza, talk about the show, give out paper plate awards, share senior advice, and cry (lots).
Strike is extremely valuable because, “It helps us build a home and a family while respecting our space,” Melvin Chavez, Class of 2026, shares from past experiences: “Even when the show ends, it allows us one final bonding opportunity.”

Students in the program will tell you theater is the best place to make new friends you wouldn’t usually meet or get to know. Kyla adds, “It gives you perspective and lets you interact with all walks of life.”
Now that all large productions are over for this school year, the theater department looks forward to performing the Advanced Acting Showcase: Thursday, April 30, at 6:30pm in the Auditorium, tickets sold at the door.
Congratulations to everyone for putting on such an amazing show; we look forward to seeing what the next production will be.
