Awards shows such as the Grammys, Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys are measures of excellence of the media we consume. The 2018 awards season has been full of drama thus far, and will continue to be as we lead up into more shows. The Tony Awards, focused on stage shows including plays and musicals, honor the best of the Broadway season. On May 1, the nominees for the 2018 Tony Awards were announced by Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. and Waitress star Katharine McPhee.

Mean Girls and Spongebob lead the pack with twelve nominations each, which is a testament to the hard work it takes to turn a television or movie hit that’s already well known and transform it into a Broadway show with new actors, lighting, and songs. Carousel, Angels in America and The Band’s Visit all earned eleven nominations, and all five of these shows can be expected to take home quite a few Tony awards. This year’s nominations are all deserving of the nominations and the awards, so competition will be strong on Tonys night. Tune into the Tony Awards, hosted by Waitress star, Sara Bareilles, and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 star, Josh Groban, on June 10.
