On Sept. 7, in his 6th year at school, 1995, Harry has private lessons with his headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.  During his first private lesson, the two enter the memory of Bob Ogden, a member of the Ministry of Magic, where Harry learns of the situation surrounding Tom Riddle’s parents and their families.

The magical feat is achieved using a Pensieve which is a magical object that allows users to extract memories and visit them alone or with others.  The word PENSIEVE is an amalgamation of two words, pensive, meaning “expressing or revealing thoughtfulness” and sieve, meaning “an instrument used for separating parts of matter or straining liquids.” Linguistically, this is a device used for sifting through thoughts and memories.
