The Coronado Girls’ basketball program is entering a new stage this year as Coach Lays steps into the role of head coach. After joining the program last year as the JV coach, he is now leading the entire program and bringing a fresh perspective to the team. His move into the head position marks a noticeable change in structure, energy, team bonding, and direction for the players.
Many returning players have known Coach Lays since last year, when he joined the program as the JV coach. As a result, the change feels smoother than a typical coaching switch. Players say they already understand his expectations, coaching style, and personality, which made the adjustment easier.
For athletes who have been on the team since their freshman year, the program has changed noticeably the past few seasons. They described this year as more organized, focused and goals being clearly communicated. Ebony Garcia, Class of 2027, explains, “When Coach Lays is introducing new plays, he draws it out for us on a white board rather than just putting us in spots. It helps us understand the play before we try it.” This is one of the biggest differences from how Coach Lays teaches and prepares the team.
Even though he has only been at Coronado for a short period of time, Coach lays made an immediate impact. Genevieve Speer, Class of 2027, states, “One major difference I have noticed with Coach Lays becoming head coach is the seriousness and devotion to playing and getting everyone to be the best player they can be.”
The team has also experienced growth off the court, thanks to increased bonding and connection. Ebony explains that “Coach Lays has a stronger bond with the players, making it easier for the team to trust him. You can see how we want each player to succeed.” With a familiar coach stepping into a bigger role and the team responding positively, the girls’ basketball program is building momentum for a strong season.
