The girls’ soccer program is using preseason training to build fitness, improve fundamentals, and establish a strong team culture ahead of the spring season, according to Head Coach and Math teacher Kyle Yeh.
With approximately 50 players participating in preseason sessions held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays through February 14. Practices take place on the Coronado Turf, in the basement of the main building, and in the weight room.
Coach Yeh explained that “while conditioning is a major focus, preseason is also an important time for bringing players together.” Conditioning and fundamental attacking and defending principles are emphasized early, as the high school season is short and physically demanding with most games being multiple times a week.
The coaching staff has already observed significant improvement throughout preseason, particularly in player fitness and mental toughness. According to Coach Yeh, exercises that were difficult at the beginning of preseason are now completed more easily, and more players are pushing through challenging workouts.
Preseason also allows time for team bonding before the busy season begins. Yeh noted that giving players the opportunity to connect and communicate early helps strengthen team chemistry. Each preseason is different due to the changing group of players, but the main focus remains on hard work, togetherness, and support.
Tryouts for the season begin Monday, February 23, at 3:30 p.m. on the Coronado Turf, with the first preseason scrimmage scheduled for February 28. To participate at the first practice, players need to make sure to register at the Business Office on the third floor in the Main Building, and bring cleats, shin guards, and water.
